Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra - - Two young Turkish-Cypriots, Mine Balman and Besim Baysal, have worked together since 2016 to produce this 60’ documentary film, which is an oral testimony as to how the Armenian refugees came to Cyprus after the Adana massacre (1909) and the Genocide (1915-1923), how they lived together with Turkish- and Greek-Cypriots, how they left or Image may contain: 3 people, people smilingwere ousted from the Armenian Quarter of Nicosia in 1963-1964, how they experienced the Turkish invasion in 1974 and what they did after the partial lifting of travel restrictions between the two parts of the island in 2003. Mine and Besim are both well-educated and also support the Armenian cause.

This documentary film features interviews from seven (7) Armenian-Cypriots (Annig Tourian, Artin Anmahouni, Arto Haroutunian, Azniv Baladouni, Elsie Utidjian, Koharig Paroian-Avraam and Verkin Nahikian), as well as two (2) Turkish-Cypriots (Erdninç Gündüz and Fatma Kişmir), all born between 1922-1961. These people share a number of stories pertaining to their families, neighbours and communities, all with a common denominator: they used to live in Nicosia before the inter-communal troubles of 1963-1964; Armenian-Cypriots used to live with Turkish-Cypriots and vice versa. Some historical information is provided, along with old photographs, a map of the Armenian Genocide and population figures for Armenians in Cyprus between 1881-1960. Every attempt has been made to keep away from political messages; instead, the majority of the interviewees provide their own memories, facts and ideas, allowing for the viewers to shape their own interpretations.

The entire film is in Turkish, with English subtitles (translated by Yeşer Özdenya Cambaz and rectified by Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra, also with the help of Elsie Utidjian). Turkish was chosen because it is the mother tongue of both the film-makers and the interviewees’ parents and/or grandparents. Speakers of Turkish will notice different dialects amongst the interviewees, depending on where their family was from. The first screening will took place on Wednesday, 27 September 2017, at the old building of the Armenian Club in occupied walled Nicosia, next to the recently-restored Armenian church compound in Victoria street (presently known as “Arabahmet Cultural Centre”), which was chosen by the film-makers as the best place to pay tribute to the community, which - even though has been physically absent for over half a century - is always in the heart of the quarter.
Two more screenings followed, one at the Turkish-Cypriot Journalists' Association (18 October) and one at the Home for Cooperation (26 October) and more screenings are schedule for the near future, both in Cyprus and abroad.

It is my belief that projects such as this will assist our endeavour to spread awareness on the Armenian Genocide and the drama of Cyprus (1963-1964 & 1974), not only within the government-controlled areas, but also to an increasingly receptive number of educated and enlightened Turkish-Cypriots living in the occupied areas. I urge each and every one not to speculate before having watched it, but to watch it and then form their own opinion. If anything, it will be an hour well spent!

News in Brief

► Armenia and the European Union signed a long-anticipated accord, known as the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to strengthen ties between the two sides. The agreement was signed by Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. “This comprehensive and ambitious agreement is our joint endeavor that opens a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the Republic of Armenia and the European Union,” Nalbandian said at the signing ceremony.
► Already strained ties between NATO allies Ankara and Washington have deteriorated in recent weeks as Turkish-Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab, who is cooperating with U.S. prosecutors, detailed in court a scheme to evade U.S. sanctions. Over three days of testimony, Zarrab has implicated top Turkish politicians, including Erdogan. Zarrab said on Thursday that Erdogan personally authorized two Turkish banks to join the scheme when he was Prime Minister.
► Prosecutors in Ankara accuse Graham E. Fuller, the former Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA, of violating Turkey's Constitution, attempting to overthrow the government and obtaining confidential government documents for espionage purposes, according to state news agency Anadolu.
► Vandals painted red “X”s on 13 houses in the predominantly Alevi district of Cemal Gursel in Malatya, where Paylan’s grandparents are from and currently is known as a conservative city with 800,000 residents. Two days after the Alevi homes were vandalized, an Armenian church association was pelted with stones when the office was empty. Local police have yet to investigate these incidents.
Malatya is home to about a few dozen Armenians. Before the Genocide, one-third of the city’s residents were Armenian.
► New internship opportunities at the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy

► The French city Alfortville signed a friendship declaration with #Artsakh #NagornoKarabakh city Berdzor with the presence of the President of Artsakh Republic Bako Sahakyan.
► American TV icon Anthony Bourdain is the latest addition to the now-infamous and ever-growing Azerbaijani "Blacklist" of 700 persona non grata including Parliamentarians, Scientists, Academics, Artists, Journalist and Entertainers. In a series of tweets, Hikmet Hajiyev of the Azeri Foreign Ministry called Armenian National Committee of America Executive Director Aram Hamparian a terrorist, a racist and a mafia boss ... all in one.
► Last month, MEP Eleni Theocharous’ personal website was attacked by a Turkish hacker group. Visitors to the website were redirected to a video featuring speeches of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The logo of the Turkish hacker group Aslan Neferler Tim – Lion soldiers team – appeared on the video. The same group last year hacked Armenian government websites.
