The Cyprus Mail - Young heartthrob Hovig Demirdjian will represent Cyprus at next year’s Eurovision song contest to be held in Kiev, Ukraine on May 9-13.
State broadcaster CyBC, a member of the EBU network that hosts the annual song contest in the previous year’s winning country, said that it had chosen the young singer “because he is especially talented and much loved by the public.”
It added that the composition of the entry song to represent Cyprus has been commissioned to the popular Swedish musician, Thomas G:Son.
The young Armenian singer made headlines when he reached the final stages of the Greek reality talent show, X-Factor, and from then on saw his musical career surge, as a singer songwriter, performing in Greece, the Middle East and more recently in Russia. He was a finalist among candidates for this year’s entry and had attempted several times in the past as well.
On his Facebook page, Hovig posted, “Nai! (that’s Greek for yes), that’s all I said to CyBC when they popped the Eurovision question.”
“This year, I intend to work very hard, day and night, to deliver the best possible performance in Kiev.”
“Cyprus is a diverse (and hot) island. Diversity runs in our ideas, our people, our music. Our small island is an oasis of awesome talented people with amazing Mediterranean temperament.”
He concluded, “Eurovision is happening guys and it’s going to be fun. Let’s do this!”

Birthright Armenia (Depi Hayk) is a non-profit organization established in 2003 by Edele Hovnanian. Birthright Armenia runs a year-round program for Diasporan Armenian youth, aged 20-32 years old, to experience Armenia as active participants: to come, volunteer and connect deeply with the country.
Our participants stay in Armenia from 1-12 months, immersing themselves in the diverse Armenian experience. They are provided with professional internships, subsidized home stays, language classes and lecture series, free of charge. It also reimburses the airfare if the participants meet all the requirements of the program.

Birthright Armenia envisions:
► A significant percentage of Diasporan youth having personal ties to Armenia, a better understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and political issues and needs there, and globally participating in Armenia's development.
► Energized and inspired Armenian homeland youth, committed to remaining in Armenia, as a result of a better understanding of their critical role in nation building and a stronger connection to their Diasporan counterparts.
► The development of future leaders of the Diaspora with a better understanding of and strong ties with the homeland, promoting the importance of participation in Armenia's development within their local communities worldwide.

Our mission is to strengthen ties between the homeland and Diasporan youth by affording them an opportunity to be a part of Armenia's daily life and to contribute to Armenia's development through work, study and volunteer experiences, while developing life-long personal ties and a renewed sense of Armenian identity.
As of 2016, more than 1200 individuals from more than 44 countries have participated in the Birthright Armenia program; around 70 alumni moved to Armenia for long-term stays.

Peter Balakian Receives
Pulitzer Prize for Poetry

NEW YORK - Peter Balakian received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for poetry at the 100th anniversary Ceremony of the Pulitzer Prizes held at Columbia University on Oct. 13. Balakian was one of the seven recipients in the fields of Letters, Drama, and Music.
Among the other recipients were Viet Thanh Nguyen in fiction for his novel "The Sympathizer", Lin-Manuel Miranda in drama for the musical Hamilton, and jazz composer Henry Threadgill for “In For a Penny In for a Pound.” Among the fourteen prizes in journalism were Kathryn Schultz for Feature Writing at the New Yorker, Alyssa J. Rubin for International Reporting at The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times Staff for Breaking News Reporting.
Professor Daniele Allen, Director of the Edmond J. Safra Center For Ethics at Harvard University, was the keynote speaker. The awards were presented by Lee C. Bollinger, President of Columbia University.
The Pulitzer committee cited Ozone Journal for “poems that bear witness to the old losses and tragedies that undergird a global age of danger and uncertainty.” Writing about Ozone Journal in Consequence Magazine, Keith Jones wrote: “Balakian is a master of—the drifting, split-second mirage, the cinematic dissolve and cross-cut as well as the sculptural, statuesque moment chiseled out of consonant blends and an imagistic, jazzman’s ear for vowels… beautiful, haunting, plaintive, urgent, in our dying world’s age, these poems legislate a vital comportment to the demands of our shared present, timely and untimely both.” And David Wojahn in Tikkun wrote: “Few American poets of the boomer generation have explored the interstices of public and personal history as deeply and urgently as has Balakian.”
Balakian is the first Armenian American to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize since William Saroyan in 1940.

The evening includes a discussion about the adaptation to a new audience and leads into activities found in the book. Prepare to learn some phrases in Armenian, draw “bird letters”, learn a song or a dance. An event for all ages. Copies of the book in Turkish and in English will be available for sale.

Kim Bu Ermeniler? the Turkish translation of "Who Are the Armenians?", was released in August 2016. Artin Anmahouni is undoubtedly a far-famed and colourful personality, both within the Armenian-Cypriot community and the broader society of Cyprus: a former athlete and film-maker, he is an author, a poet, a painter, a photographer, a scoutmaster and also a philanthropist and a benefactor of the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus, the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, as well as of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia. He is also a living witness of Cypriot reality in general and Armenian-Cypriot reality in specific, with memories from the early 1930s and a uniquely rich photographic archive. A tireless servant of scouting and Armenianism, Artin Anmahouni has led a full life, filled of action, inspiration and volunteering. His wife, Sirarpi, was also honoured with a khachkar (cross-stone) for the Anmahouni couple’s substantial contributions and services.

The “Knight of Cilicia” medal was established by Cypriot-born Catholicos Khoren I Paroian, along with the medals “Saint Mesrob Mashdots”, “Saint Nerses the Gracious” and “Prince of Cilicia”. According to available information, the following Armenian-Cypriots have received this medal, awarded for major benefactions and services rendered: Aram Kevorkian (1888-1976), Vahan Bedelian (1894-1990), Dr Antranik L. About Hilda Paroian
Hilda Paroian was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1983. At the age of 16, she started private vocal coaching sessions with Professor of Opera and Concert Soloist, Sona Gargaloyan and just after completing 2 years, Hilda was given the opportunity to perform a recital where she sang an Aria from “Le Nozze di Figaro” by W.A. At this recital, she was approached and offered a scholarship to Italy in order to pursue her passion for classical music which sadly she turned down in order to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration Management.
In 2003, Hilda was chosen to participate in the choir “Madrigal” under the guidance of the conductor, Miroslav Gospodinoff. One of the many performances was the 23rd International Choral Festival that took place in Preveza, Greece. In 2010, she took part at the recital entitled "New Voices" performing famous aria pieces by Mozart, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, and many others. As singing for charitable causes is close to Hilda’s heart, in 2013 she was asked to sing for a charity concert hosted by the Red Cross entitled "From Hearts to Hearts" for children with heart diseases.
In the same year, Hilda also performed for the Armenians affected by the war in Syria and towards the end of the year, together with fellow opera singers, hosted a successful evening which included a recital entitled "Voci di Autunno" at the Castelliotissa Hall where a selection of famous arias and duets were performed. In 2015, she took part in the ceremony dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
In the same year, Hilda also took part in the charity event organized by the Pancyprian Thalassaemia Association which consisted of famous opera arias and duets. In 2016, Hilda received her Advanced Certificate in Singing with Distinction from the Trinity College London.
