Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra for Gibrahayer e-magazine - Last Sunday, 13 May 2012, the fifth annual visit-pilgrimage to the Armenian Monastery was co-organised by the Office of Vartkes Mahdessian and the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus. For me it was the 4th time to attend such an event; however, this time was different because it included a visit to Victoria street and the old church.
I can only attempt to imagine what the dozens of older Armenian-Cypriots felt when visiting the old Sourp Asdvadzadzin church in Turkish-occupied Nicosia for the first time since 1963-1964. It must have been mind-blowing… But, from what I could hear in the bus towards Magaravank, I know that most were anxious to go there.
Upon visiting the site, I was finally able to see and enter the renovated compound, for which I have read and written so much... Needless to say that when this project was first presented to us in December 2008, I could never believe it would be so successful. But then again, when there's a will there's a way.
Congratulations to the visionary Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian, the Armenian Ethnarchy and the United Nations Development Programme for all the work they have done. Let us hope that this project, a work of over $4.000.000, will remain a legacy for generations to come and soon the walls of the church shall once again be filled with Armenian sharagans.

There are Armenians in Turkey who must not be scared and bravely return to their roots, said head of the Union of Armenians of Dersim Mihran Prkich Gultekin. In an interview with the Turkish Akit newspaper, he said 75 percent of the population of Dersim has Armenian roots. Some of them are Alawite, while others have merged with the Kurds. Speaking about opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Gultekin said that his mother was Armenian and it is not a secret for all the residents of this region. "However, Kilicdaroglu prefers to hide his Armenian roots thus insulting his mother. The area where he lives is an Armenian settlement. In Dersim everyone knows about it. His mother's name is Emosh, and she is also named Emush," he said.
